Consider

Consider the table
and the loaf of bread
in the failing light and gathering wind
of a late September supper time.
Consider these things
and your own obscure part
in the softly inhering order.

Consider the milk
on the wooden floor
and the cat which comes to lap it there
and the girl who stands on the bottom stair.
Consider her gaze
and the cat's unconcern
at the quietly inhering order.

Consider the bird
alighting, departing;
consider its darting across the sky,
all of a piece with the trees nearby:
the massive geometry
and minute chronometry
of the swiftly inhering order.

Consider the rain
at the window pane;
consider the half-open bedroom door
and the coin which rolls across the floor.
Consider the night
and the lamp's slight light
on the darkly inhering order.
