1
I came to you as to a war -
a child before, and after, man -
so sharp my tumble through the air
so fierce the ammunition
You were my bridgehead - and the night
quite moonless - and the wash of fear -
yet - having reached you - under fire
by luck - I knew it - Eden - here
2
Desires - are deer - which steal at dusk -
about the streets of stone.
The programmer, with laden mind,
may think himself - alone -
yet starts! Where pools of darkness lie
the hind - waits - still - with glassy eye.
The hidden herd, ten thousand strong,
slips silent through the press.
The programmer - in disarray -
forgets byte - for caress.
Yet as swift slip the beasts away
intestate - come - the glaring day -
3
You clutched me - when -
the raven passed - Old Gloom -
out picking - bones of lambs -
and gleaning flesh from whom he may.
I was not - strong - enough to stay
his silken oily master's blows
And yet - he left us. Why? Can't say.
Thus - vivimus. And live - to pray
that care might be abolished by
disdain - inscribed in a dark eye.
4
Leaf lavished - here - within the wood -
we creep - two foreign spies.
Like all that kind, we telegraph
not wood itself - but trees.
5
Most monstrous night is - yesterday -
its brightness hurtled from us - far -
across the space - where no force is -
where being - unbegan - to be -
Tomorrow is - today - lit by -
pale beams - of our imagining.
Machines and ease we conjure - yet
it's love's slow ivy - comes to save -
Today is - all time tapered to -
the point at which - a cat may - purr -
or stranger smile - or birds take wing:
a hundred hearts - beating in air -
is now, is always, infinite.
